The tour can be shot at any time, however it is best to shoot when the sun is not shining directly in through windows. All faces are blurred out for privacy. However, having people in the tour becomes a distraction to the viewer, it is best to shoot the tour with few if any customers present. It is easier to shoot retail businesses with customers present because you can shoot around them – they don’t stay in the same place long. With restaurants, the opposite is true so its best to shoot them empty.

Quality, experience and technique. I have been doing Google Tours longer than anyone in the area. I have a special HDR and post processing technique that produces higher quality tours. The single biggest factor that determines the quality of the tour is handling the differences between light and shadow, interior and exterior. HDR merges multiple exposures. Google only requires 3 exposures per view. Some situations require the nine exposures I take to balance the extremes of light and dark.

As mentioned earlier, people in the tour are distracting. The eye is drawn to ares of contrast – what stands out in the photo. People stand out and the eye is drawn to them instead of your business. It take more time to wait for them to move, or politely and discreetly handle the situation. The end result is well worth the extra time I take.

Small tours can be completed in about an hour. Larger tours can take several hours. As I said earlier, I will devote the extra time required to product a higher quality tour.

The virtual tour is created with still photographs that are shot as multiple exposures and stitched together. A video is shot with a full motion camera. The virtual tour does nothing until a user takes the controls and rotates, zooms, or moves through the views. It is self guided and interactive. A video is not — it’s on autopilot and doesn’t allow the user to make any decisions about what they’re viewing. It is a guided tour. It is an infomercial.

The two products are complimentary and a bit like comparing apples to oranges – like watching a movie versus walking onto the movie set. The strength of the video is the tight control it gives you of your marketing message (showing them what you want to show) and it’s audio track (voice-over) which adds personality and tells them what you want to communicate. It can combine still photos, interviews and captions into a multimedia experience. However, it cannot tour your entire business and must be kept short to match attention spans. A video is like a TV commercial.
